    Question Hard to Believe

I was just told that Wise County could not guarentee his position and Lee High wanted him.
Could this be the end of an era? Whether anyone wants to admit it or not the athletic department at PV will suffer! Coach Robbins to Lee High? "HARD TO BELIEVE"

Wow, I do find that hard to believe.

They are willing to throw the most successful coach in this area ever out?

    Re: Hard to Believe

If its true, here is the scenario.
A teacher at max pay, with coaching sup for football, AD and Track?

Its happening everywhere with govt workers, they are easing out workers who have been there and reached highest level pay band for entry level people at lowest pay band. In some cases ( I have no idea about this one, just speaking in terms of govt employees) you can eliminate someone who has 20-30 years of service (by buyout etc) and hire two people at entry level salaries.

Is'nt Phil retired from teaching? Coaching sup in Wise County is $5000. I think Lee County is $6000. But if Phil wanted the coaching job at Lee what other conditions go along with the hire? Teaching and coaching position for Brad? What kind of assistants would he have? How would Lee handle the assistants / teaching positions? I think Phil at Lee is as a long shot as Don Williams coming back for a third time!

    Re: Hard to Believe

If this is true, then I'm just incredulous. Robbins may be a controversial figure, but he deserves to go out on his own terms. I'd be incredibly disappointed in any potential solution that doesn't involve retaining him as the head coach. Simply put, no other coach in the area has his resume. Politics can be a vicious thing, and this smacks of partisanship and favoritism. Authority figures from other communities who gleefully desire the utter destruction of Big Stone Gap and Appalachia athletics should not make this decision, though they will attempt to. The people of both Appalachia and Powell Valley should have say in this debate, but ultimately the job must go to the most qualified candidate. The most qualified candidate gives us the best chance to WIN.

Growing up in the coalfields is a special thing, because we have terrific people and institutions that make our community a great place to live. Football is a special institution in our community, but hear this, if politics are allowed to choose the next football coach at the consolidated school, then our football program will resemble that of Lee County. Politics have destroyed that football program, and if we cannot settle on the most qualified candidate, then we too will desintegrate. The people of Appalachia and Powell Valley deserve a winner. They deserve a coach with proven results. Though he may have been a vigorous opponent and a ferocious competitor in the past, Robbins is a winner. He has 7 state championships in football and 1 championship in track to his credit. People may view Coach Robbins with animus, but he will bring continued success and stability to our program in the consolidated school, and this is OUR program. He is the coach we need. Make whomever you choose the "coach in waiting." A coach in waiting is something that we can negotiate. However, an alternative decision will likely set the program back for years, and we will fail to be competitive against our rivals including the 1200 person school at "Wise North."

Remember, the component schools of Lee High were very competitive until the school consolidated and a host of poor political decisions lead to disasterous results on the gridiron. If politics rule the decisionmaking behind this job, then we are destined to fail as an athletics program. Neither folks from Appalachia nor Big Stone Gap have been willing to sacrifice a championship team in order to accomplish a political objective. We cut off our noses despite our faces if we choose spite over success. If the best player should play, then it follows that the best coach should coach. The best coach is Phil Robbins, and he deserves a chance to coach in the new consolidated school.

    Re: Hard to Believe

Lee High's coach did not resign but was told that his contract would not be renewed. Phil Robbins has talked with Lee High but the offer that he wants is that he can bring 1 assistant with him that being his son. The problem is that Lee High is also suffering budget cuts and will have a hard time creating a teaching position for his son when they are crunching numbers as it is. Wise county does not want to lose Turner because they feel that they need them when they do combine Appalachia and PV. What will happen is anyones guess but as a General fan I would love to see Phil Robbins at Lee and hope that they can work something out.

    Re: Hard to Believe

Well, I will tell you this, if he goes to Lee High, they had better get ready for a totally new brand of football and they(potential players) had better get ready to be a lot more dedicated than they have been in the past. Hope he doesn't go, but if he does, I wish him all the best.
